Hardwood floor sparkles like the sea under sunlight.
Mirror smudge-free like the Virgin Mary. Hasn’t
stepped on a crack since 2009, saving her dear
Mother from spine snappage like at least a thousand
times by now. Never has dishes in the sink, or
has clutter on the counters, or crumbs on the floor
Just in case – God forbid – her apartment catches
fire while she sleeps and the firefighters think that she is
the kind of girl to leave her dirty pasta pot overnight.
Does everything
In increments
of three.
Tried to scrub him off for three months before she gave
up: calls that persistence. Skin rubbed raw
under sparkling suds of lavender and tears.
Permanently stained; can’t get clean enough to move
on. To forgive the beach for what it allowed or the fabric
of the backseat for not letting her melt into its leather.
If she were bleeding out on the floor, she would be
thinking only of the staining properties of her own blood.
Knows to blot with cold water, not hot.
Is aware she’s gotta follow that with hydrogen peroxide.
But won’t be able to resist cutting herself
two more times: calls that consistency.
